The first person in the recorded history to explore Kansas was a Spanish explorer Francisco de Coronado. He explored this area in 1541. The further exploration and addition to this area was by Sieur de la Salle of France. He started his expedition on 1682 and the area claimed by the French explorer includes present-day Kansas. In 1763 this territory was given to Spain which was reverted to France again in 1800. It was sold to the America as part of the Louisiana Purchase contract in 1803.The first permanent white settlements established in Kansas were the outposts developed in Fort Leavenworth in1827, Fort Scott in 1842 and Fort Riley in 1853. This title was given to state of Kansas when the fights raised between pro and anti slavery forces before civil war.
