Kilimanjaro or Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge strato-volcano situated in Tanzania’s National Kilimanjaro Park. It is 5,895 meters high from sea level that makes it highest mountain of Africa. There is no known reason behind its name “Kilimanjaro”. Here are some facts about Kilimanjaro.
1. Description
Mount Kilimanjaro comprises of three volcanoes named Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is highest peak among all three with height 5,895 meters. The heights of other two volcanos that are Mawenzi and Shira is 5,149 and 3,926 meters respectively.
2. Kibo- The Only Alive Volcao
Kibo that is the highest one mountain of Mount Kilimanjaro is the only live volcano that could erupt again. The other two that are Mawenzi and Shira are dead now. Kibo was erupted last time about 200 years ago.
3. World Record
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in entire world and also highest mountain of African continent as well.
4. First Ascent
Hans Meyer of Germany did the first ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro on 5th October, 1889. Yoanas Kinyala Lauwo of Tanzania and Ludwig Purtscheller of Austria were the companions of Hans Meyer in this first ascent.
5. Routes of Mount Kilimanjaro
Officially, there are six trekking routes of Mountain Kilimanjaro. The names of these trekking routes are Shira, Marangu, Umbwe, Rongai, Machame and Lemosho.
