There are three kinds of rocks, which make the crust of earth; igneous rocks are one of them. There are more than 700 types of igneous rocks and majority of these rocks forms inside the earth crust. Igneous rocks can also form as a result of crystallization. Here are some facts about igneous rocks.
1. Oldest rocks
With the passage of time and advancement of technology, scientists discovered new rocks. However, igneous rocks are oldest rocks, as they were discovered long time ago.
2. Formation of rocks
Igneous rocks form deep inside the earth, as they form from magma, so they need very high temperature for their formation. When hot magma travels towards the earth surface, it starts cooling and hence igneous rocks are formed.
3. Types of igneous rocks
If magma cools down slowly large crystalline rocks are formed, that are called intrusive rocks. If magma cools down quickly the resultant rocks are called extrusive rocks.
4. Characteristics
Igneous rocks are known for their size of crystals and different colors. Depending on the color of mineral, igneous rocks can been seen in a wide range of colors, from pink to black. Strong, heat resistant and presence in abundance are the few characteristics of these rocks.
5. Uses
Igneous rocks are widely used in the construction of buildings. They are suitable for kitchen counters and other fulfills other decorative purposes as well. Some igneous rocks are used in making jewelry as well.
