Rainforests are great biological resource. Once they were covering more than 15 % of the total land area of the earth. They are house of large number of species of animals, plants and even insects. They also provide us timber, oils and other natural products, however now they are shrinking rapidly. Here we are discussing some facts about tropical rainforests.
1. Dense trees
The trees in tropical rainforest are so close to each other that rain falling on the top layer, can take around 10 minutes to reach to the ground.
2. Slow moving sloths
Sloths are the small animals, found in Rainforest in South America. They move so slowly in the forest that algae can grow in their fur coats.
3. Flower verities
A great verity of animals and plants are found in rain forest. Many flowers are also found there and 80% of these flowers are not found anywhere else in the world.
4. Origin of medicines
Many commonly used medicines were made with the products found in rainforest. That is the reason they are called as nature’s chemists. Some common ingredients like cardamom, ginger, resins, gums, vanilla etc were first found in rain forests.
5. Biggest rainforest
The biggest rainforest is present in South America, which is called as Amazon. This forest is in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. This place is home of millions of insect, birds, animals and plants.
6. Pollination of foodstuff
Pollination of various food stuffs in rainforests is brought about a weird creature named as bat. Without bats, the reproduction of mangoes as well as bananas is not possible in these rainforests.
7. Lugs of Earth
It is considered as the world’s largest rain forest “Amazon” produces 20% of whole Oxygen that is required for respiration of living organisms on the earth. So, this rainforest is trul called as “Lungs of Earth”.
8. Largest source of Pharmaceuticals
About 25% of all pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforests. This ratio is much from tropical plants that is just 1%. You can say that rainforests are the largest source of producing medicinal plants.
9. Fastest growth of Bamboo plants
It has been observed that for the fastest growth of bamboo plants, no other source is suitable than rainforests. In these rainforests, a bamboo plant has ability of grow up to 9 inches a day.
10. Omnivore Monkeys
The monkeys live in rainforests, have mostly wild nature. Some species of rainforests monkeys have become omnivore and they can eat any kind of food from meat to plants.
