Baalbeck Facts

Baalbeck is a city of Lebanon that is famous for its ruins of ancient Temples. In fact, this place is thought as the worship place of “Phoenician sun god” in the past that was named as Baal or Bel. In the past, the name of the city was “Heliopolis”. Here are some facts about Baalbeck.

1.  Location of Baalbeck

Ballbeck is located in the Beeqa Valley Lebanon in the northeast of Beirut, east of Litani River and north of Damascus with an altitude of 1170 meters.

2. Heliopolis – The City of Sun

The old Greek name of Baalbeck was Heliopolis that means “The City of Sun”. During roman Empire, this city was isolated with the theme of Augutus Colony.

3. Famous Temples

The city of Baalbeck is famed for its ruins of two world-famous temples called “Temple of Jupiter” and “Temple of Bacchus”. Today, these temples are claimed as greatest Roman treasure of Lebanon.

4. Baalbeck International Festival

Baalbeck International festival is one of the most world-famous festivals that is celebrated in the city of Baalbeck every year in the months of July and August since 1955. Many music and dance shows are arranged in the festival every year.

5. World Heritage Site

In 1984, UNESCO reported the Baalbeck and its colossal structures in world Heritage Site.
