Eagle flies with all its glory that has been bestowed to it by the GOD. Among the flying animals, it is considered as the bravest and liked the most for this quality. There are many species of eagles in the world. One of them is the American bald eagle. Despite of its being an eagle, there are many other facts that are not known to many. 1. Weight and height
On average, the bald American eagle is measured to be of 9 pounds in size and their height is about three feet.
2. Wing span
Eagles are big and beautiful. When they fly, they can be seen even from a distance. The surprising thing is their wing span. They when expand their wings to their full length, the span becomes 5.5 to 7.5 feet long.
3. Their nests
As they are big, their nests are also big. The biggest nest of the bald eagle seen is found in Florida where a pair of bald eagles made their nest that weighed 10 tones; it was six meters deep and was four meters in height.
4. The term bald
The bald eagle is not actually bald as people may conceive from its name. it got its name from the term “piebald” which means spotty or patchy. The bald eagles have white head and tail and rest of the body is brown. In addition to that, the term bald is derived from old english’s term balde which means white.
5. Their eyesight
The eagles are bestowed with the eye sight that is four to seven times better than the eye sight of humans. They have got this eye sight to find for their food from far distance as much as one mile.
6. Other names
The other names given to bald eagles are American eagles, Washington eagles and white headed eagles.
7. Vocal cords
The interesting thing to know is that eagles do not have vocal chords. They make the squeaking and screeching sound from the wind that passes through their bones from the place where wind pipe goes to lungs. This is to show the bond between the married eagles or they make it to warn any intruder that passes through their area.
8. Speed
With their enormous strength and beauty it is not hard to imagine that they can fly with great speeds. They fly at 30 miles per hour speed and can dive down at 100 miles per hour speed.
9. Female vs Male
The female eagles are larger in size than their male counterparts.
10. Feathers
The bald eagles have estimated to have 7,000 feathers that protect them from heat and cold and are very light weight but flexible. They help them to fly at great heights.
